Visit Chatillon-sur-Seine, Burgundy

The attractive town of Chatillon-sur-Seine is in a picturesque setting on the upper reaches of the Seine river, in the Cote d'Or department of north-eastern Burgundy.

Exploring Chatillon-sur-Seine

The centre of the town contains various medieval houses and some other notable monuments.

The source of the River Douix is in the town, and there is a ruined castle and the roman style Church of Saint Vorles above, which contains a 16th century 'mise au tombeau' (statues representing christ being placed in his tomb).

The 17th century Hotel du Congres and Convent of the Cordeliers are among the other medieval buildings to admire here.

Treasury of Vix

But Chatillon-sur-Seine has another fascinating attraction for which it is better known - the Treasure of Vix. Discovered near to Chatillon-sur-Seine, the burial site of a princess dating from 2600 years ago was found to contain numerous magnificent treasures that are now on display in the town, along with parts of the chariot in which the Princess was buried.

The treasure of Vix was an incredible find in this quiet location near Chatillon-sur-Seine - discovered by an archaeologist in 1953 when he noticed a slight hump in the ground and proceeded to start excavations - and it is not really explained how it came to be there.

The treasures are now on display in a museum in the town in the cistercian Abbey of Notre-Dame, and include such marvels as the tiara that the princess was wearing, an enormous bronze vase (about 1.5 metres high), and numerous other rare and exciting treasures, along with more mundane everyday pottery items.

The weekly market in Chatillon-sur-Seine is held each saturday morning in the covered market.

Attractions nearby

The surrounding countryside is very peaceful, and the vineyards of both the Champagne and Burgundy regions are close by, as well as one of the largest forests in France, which offers numerous opportunities for walking and cycling.

The town is also close to the source of the Seine, which can be visited a further 40km south from the town.

The abbey at Fontenay, about 30 kilometres south of Chatillon-sur-Seine, is among our favourite abbeys in France and a visit is recommended.
