Visit Casteljaloux, Aquitaine
Casteljaloux is a small town located in the south-west of the Lot-et-Garonne department of south-west France, south of Marmande and west of Agen. The Pays d'Albret name (from the duchy that ruled the region in the 16th century) is now used in tourist information to describe the region around Casteljaloux (and Nerac).
A fairly quiet country town set in the rolling countrsyide typical of the Lot-et-Garonne / Gascony region, Casteljaloux doesn't have a major role on the tourist trail but is a pleasant workaday town that deserves a visit if you are passing.
Exploring Casteljaloux
Start your visit at the tourist office in Casteljaloux, situated in the historical centre of the town in an attractive old stone building called the Maison du Roy. One of the finest houses in the town it is said that both King Louis XII and King Louis XIV spent time here.
Other highlights include a good number of attractive half-timbered houses in the old town centre, the town church, and the medieval convent and cloisters of the Cordeliers, surrounding a small garden.
A small part of the original town defences can also be seen, and in the parc d'albret you can see part of a medieval castle, once visited by the future King Henry IV.
There is also a thermal spa in the town - 'Les Bains de Casteljaloux' if you feel the need for more rest and relaxation provided by the the Gascony countryside and a glass of wine!
The main centre for visitors staying at Casteljaloux is the tourist complex around the lake - Lac de Clarens - where you will find, in addition to the swimming lake, a golf course, restaurants and various accommodation options.

There are numerous pretty small villages in the region that you will come across as you tour the vineyards and sunflower fields of the surrounding Pays d'Albret nearby, many worthy of a stroll.
Among those of particular interest are Leyritz Moncassin, dominated by its castle; La Réunion, with a very lovely feudal chateau and an unusual communal bread oven; and Grézet Cavagnan, which also has a castle- the Chateau de Malvirade (open to public summer only).
